Museum Viadrina Frankfurt/Oder

The Museum Viadrina is the largest cultural-historical Museum in East Brandenburg, headquartered in the "Junkerhaus", a fascinating architectural monument of significance in the region and beyond. A palace-like house was built on top of medieval cellar caves and served as electoral / royal residence. The permanent and changing exhibitions provide visitors with the opportunity of engaging with Frankfurt’s significant role during the Middle Ages, the history of the alma mater Viadrina, military history, Frankfurt's rich and famous musical history and city developments into the 20th century. The collection contains more than 100,000 objects, photos and archive records. Located in an authentic place, the memorial and documentation site “Victims of Political Tyranny” gives information about the history of persecution during National Socialism, under Soviet occupation and during GDR times. By reference to selected biographies, the visitor’s attention is drawn to people from the city and the region, who were persecuted due to their political or religious beliefs, or just because of suspicion, got caught in the mills of the politicization of criminal justice and lost their lives under often cruel conditions.
