Velten is a furnace city. During the year 1905 alone, 100,000 furnaces were manufactured here. Most of them went to Berlin. In the same year, Gustav Gericke founded a "Museum for the Preservation of Tile Stoves, Pottery Industry and Local History". It was supposed to present history and serve as advertisement for local products. 1926, shortly after the 20th anniversary, it was bestowed a special kind of recognition. Paul Matzdorf inserted his effigy into an honorary tile dedicated to the "Pioneer of Art Ceramics". The Velten Museum, created with such commitment, underwent a curious fate later. In 1970, the city council decided to sell the complete inventory of the museum to the Museum of German History in Berlin. For decades, this treasure waited in storage, fully wrapped. Finally, in 1992, the German History Museum initiated a turn-around in presenting the exhibition "Clay Art from the Margraviate". Shortly after, the collection returned to Velten and can be viewed in the "Furnace and Ceramics Museum".
