On Monday, 13 December 1993, steel was molten from 4:30 a.m. until 11:50 a.m. in the steelworks in Brandenburg an der Havel in Furnace X. For testing purposes, several samples were taken and sent to the laboratory via pneumatic post for a spectrum analysis. After a few minutes, the smelter would find out whether the quality was okay or whether additives would be required. The last tapping began at 12:15 p.m. 173 tons of construction steel were melted to be used in the rolling mill over the following days. A day like any other from a technological standpoint. But this time, many of the workers had gathered in the hall. The foreman held a speech and the works council had come equipped with a black flag. That was the last day steel was ever molten in the Siemens-Martin Steelworks Brandenburg. At this point, the demolition of the first furnaces was already under way. Reduced working hours had been requested for the staff, the first lay-offs had already happened. That day also signified the end of the long Siemens-Martin tradition in Western Europe. At least one of the enormous furnaces was later declared a monument and today is the core of the Industrial Museum.
