Archeological finds between the end of the great migration and the beginning of the Slavic land grab are rare. That is why we are somewhat in the dark when it comes to that period. But sometimes news reaches us which helps to lift the fog. Like in November of 2011 near Biesenbrow in the Uckermark region. During an archeological post-examination, gold coins from the 5th and 6th century were discovered here. They were part of a coin collection which had already been unearthed more than a century earlier during field work. Back then, more than 200 coins were found; unfortunately, most of them were melted down. Thanks to old property maps, the find spot could be determined and checked with probes. Eight "solidi", coined in Rome, Constantinople and the Franconian Empire were found. Some are heavily bent. Someone probably wanted to verify they were really made of gold. How the coin treasure came to the somewhat remote Uckermark and why it was buried? There surely is a dramatic story behind it. Maybe archeology will tell us one day.
